If you’re missing teeth, you truly may just want your two front teeth. The song “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth,” will have all new meaning. The song is targeted to children who want to replace their lost baby teeth with adult teeth. However, if you lost an adult tooth, a cute little song does not capture the strong desire you most likely have for a replacement tooth.
If you’re missing teeth, you probably have new teeth on the top of your wish list. Did you know that this wish could be fulfilled with something called dental implants? Implants can be used to replace one tooth, several teeth or to support a full set of dentures.
A typical implant has three parts:
Implant – These are the “roots” or anchors that will support your replacement tooth. Implants are made of titanium and other materials that are acceptable to your body, and are surgically placed in your jaw. The implant cannot be seen because it is placed below the gums.
Abutment – This portion lies right above your gum line. It supports and secures your dental work (crown, bridge or denture).
Restoration – This is the portion that is made to look like your natural tooth or teeth. It typically is made of porcelain. It is securely attached to the abutment and looks, acts and feels like your natural tooth.
